Futures for the Rest of Us is a groundbreaking multimedia visual art show featuring fearless futuristic work by visionary artists belonging to groups underrepresented as lead characters in science fiction film & TV. The artists of FFRU each tell their own story of the future using art as a language.  FFRU brings fresh perspectives front and center. Why? Because the future belongs to everyone.

FFRU is currently on view at the innovative art space Blockfort, voted Columbus's #1 gallery in 2017.

CURATOR STATEMENT

We live  in a present that perpetually overlaps with an exciting, undefined future where anything is possible. Yet for a very long time, most conversations about the future have been very narrowly focused in perspective (mostly male, mostly white, mostly straight, mostly able-bodied). This is especially true in science fiction film and television. As a filmmaker working in the sci-fi genre, I am extremely aware of this distortion. Fortunately, things have begun to change and we now see a wider range of  representation and inclusion of the many kinds of people who reflect the many kinds of people who love science fiction. Futures for the Rest of Us rides that wave, but in the realm of art. This show provides a platform for underrepresented voices to speak to the future from their perspectives; after all, we are as significant and valuable as any others. These voices shape, enrich, expand, enlighten and validate our collective conversation about what lies ahead; indeed, without all voices present, any conversation about the future cannot be legitimate. As human beings, we are many groups that create a whole --- and the future belongs to all of us.
