JOSS PARKER

Joss Parker is a contemporary artist based in Columbus, Ohio, originally from California, born on New Year's Day in 1979. Yet the geographic and chronological details of his youth seem insufficient: one gathers from his work he's actually "from" a surplus of other places and times, left intriguingly indistinct. Indistinct not to conceal or escape, but to celebrate a breadth of experience and an unflinching attentiveness to tracing the ever-changing scope of popular culture. His influences and technique are almost exclusively Pop, yet the range of content is endlessly diverse and surprising, mirroring the culture itself. He's referenced everything from Marilyn Monroe to Skeletor, Kerouac to the Kool-Aid Man, The Moon Landing, My Little Pony, Malcolm X, and back. His Marilyn series is a particularly poignant illustration of his method. The influence of Warhol is immediate, undeniable, and daunting, but Joss manages to acknowledge and explore one of the world's most iconic images with individual style, audience accessibility and rooted freshness. His medium is primarily aerosol on canvas, refined to look more like a proper acrylic painting than raw or playful stencils. He's prolific as hell, and his work sells, which too often is associated with mediocre, or selling-out. In Joss' case, he's an incredibly talented artist, constantly progressing and evolving, who understands and relishes in the importance of marketing yourself and work. And after seeing his current masterwork, the quick commissions he constantly rattles off won't distract you from the transcendence he's capable of.
