YUSUF LATEEF

In my work, I am searching for a visual language that is free to pursue an authentic direction.

My process of applying and scraping material on the painted surface reveals what is relevant to me as an artist.

Having been trained in western art tradition, the void and disconnect within my African-American heritage established the starting point for fresh dialogue.

Within the work I speak to how much I don't know and how much I have unwittingly assumed as fact about the definition of art in culture. By using composition, I mediate between western traditional and indirect African influences.
